The Danish people are the happiest in the world. This is partly because they practice a lifestyle known as “Hygge”. Hygge is a Norwegian word that means “to give comfort and joy.” It’s often used to describe the all-encompassing mood of coziness, comfort, and contentment. The root is an Old Norse word hyggja, which means “to think”. In many ways, Hygge is giving yourself time to sit, think, and be with yourself. Creating your Hygge home could mean something different for everyone. To you, this might mean taking a warm bath and having a glass of wine. For others, it means cuddling up in a warm blanket, eating chocolate, and reading a good book.
Here in the United States, we have a mindset of working hard, and being proud of it. We’re encouraged to push ourselves “out of the comfort zone” if we want to succeed. This is the total opposite of “Hygge”. Having goals and wanting to succeed is great. But instead of focusing so much on hard work, take moments out of every day to indulge in something comfortable. Consider taking a bath, listen to good music, or read a book for pleasure. Don’t feel guilty about this, but rather look at it as a form of self-care and self-love. If you don’t want to burn out, it’s important to strike a balance between work and stress.
Have Technology-Free Family Dinners
With busy schedules, many families are like ships passing in the wind. Take time to slow down, and agree to put the phones away while you eat. Sitting down for a family dinner is a form of “hygge”, because it’s doing something as simple as enjoying the company of others. By talking to your loved ones about their day, you can grow closer with your family. This helps to foster the sense of togetherness and contentment in your home. According to a Harvard study, children who experience family dinners grow up to be less depressed and anxious, have higher self-esteem, less substance abuse, and are less likely to smoke or get pregnant at an early age.
Upgrade Furniture As Needed
Is the furniture in your home conducive to “Hygge”? Do you have a comfortable mattress to sleep on at night, or does it leave your back aching in the morning? Can you get cozy on your couch, or is it so hard, that you feel as though you need to get up after one episode of a TV Show? For whatever reason, so many people accidentally buy uncomfortable furniture, but they choose to simply “deal with it”. Scandanavian furniture became popular for a good reason. They typically design pieces that are built with “hygge” home in mind. Don’t feel guilty if you’re swapping your furniture in order to be more comfortable. Your back will thank you.
Start Meditating Daily
In the past, I was almost always stressed out. I felt like if I stopped to relax, it would only make the stress worse. So this caused a vicious cycle, and developed into anxiety. It was impossible for me to slow down and enjoy “hygge” home because of it. But everything changed once I started meditating. If you find that you hold onto a lot of stress and tension too, I highly suggest you start meditating daily, too. Just by carving out 10 or 15 minutes a day to sit quietly in silence, you can transform your life.
