10. Let Fresh Air In

Before you get started with any spiritual cleansing, be sure to open your windows and doors to allow fresh air to flow through your home. This is especially important if you plan to do the following suggestions of smoke cleansing. (We don’t want the fire alarm to go off.) Scientific studies have proven that poor ventilation in your home can lead to a carbon dioxide buildup, which leads to drowsiness and impaired cognitive function. So by opening your windows, you will feel better almost immediately. In the spiritual sense, some people believe that if you do a cleansing with sage, you need the window open in order to give bad spirits a way of escaping. Whether you’re a believer or not, there is plenty of evidence to prove that fresh air helps while cleaning.

9. Burn Palo Santo

Burning sticks of Palo Santo wood is supposed to neutralize the energy of your space. It’s not necessarily bringing positive or negative energy, but rather bringing it back to zero. If you want to also cleanse yourself, wave the stick around your body, or have a friend do it for you. This has been known to help alleviate anxiety, improve relaxation, as well as improve concentration. As an added bonus, Palo Santo smells really good. It’s so good, in fact, that there are companies out there that make Palo Santo scented candles to mimic these little sticks. Apparently, it helps keep the bugs away in the summer, too. Who knew?

8. Burn Incense and Herbs (Like Sage)

The practice of burning herbs, or “smudging”, has been around for centuries. Not only does it smell great, but practitioners believe that it brings in positive energy to a space. If you’re new to smudging, I highly recommend buying this combo pack with both palo santo and sage. Start out with the palo santo to neutralize the energy, and use the sage to bring forth positivity and happiness. It’s a good idea to go to your doorways and windows to spread the smoke around the entryways. Keep in mind that freshly dried sage smells the best, and it gets stale after about 6 months.

7. Bring in Nature

Keeping house plants help to give you a higher air quality, but they can also bring us a lot of joy and happiness. Plants are living things. Even though they can’t talk or communicate with you, there is still an understanding that you’re taking care of them, sort of like a pet. Plants like bamboo, peace lily, and cacti are believed to absorb negative energy from a room. There is even something called a Chinese money plant that is supposed to help make you rich! 6. Crystals

Rocks and crystals are naturally occurring on the Earth. Spiritualist believe that each crystal contains its own energy frequency, and can help in any number of ways. There’s a crystal for just about everything- love, money, courage, health- you name it. Some believe that you’ll need to buy an entire collection of starter crystals to balance out your chakras. Most scientists believe that the positive results people find from using crystals are a sort of placebo effect. Personally, I believe that anything that helps you- placebo or not- is worth trying.

5. Essential Oils

Over the past few years, essential oils have become incredibly popular as an alternative medicine. They’re even beginning to show up in pharmacies like Rite Aid! This is yet another controversial alternative form of medicine. Some sales people- especially those who belong to MLM’s, claim that essential oils can cure serious diseases. Personally, I would only go as far as to recommend using these as a form of aromatherapy. There are several beginner essential oil diffuser kits online that come with a variety of scents. Some of the oils, like eucalyptus, are proven to help with colds and flus. Apparently, lavender, sandalwood, and lime are all used with Reiki spiritual healing ceremonies.

4. Avoid Watching Content That Brews Negative Energy

In today’s world, you can’t turn on the news without seeing something that is truly tragic and upsetting. Whether we like to admit it or not, this will completely darken the mood of a space over time. Same goes with dramatic or moody films and TV shows. We aren’t suggesting that you need to live under a rock and avoid those topics forever. But if you’re having a day where you really just need to relax and clear the energy of your home, try to watch happy, funny, soothing content instead. A lot of people tend to go back to a movie or TV series they’ve already seen before, because they already know what to expect ahead of time. This is why Hallmark romance movies are so popular; It’s guaranteed to have a happy ending and make you feel good.

3. Practice Feng Shui

Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese tradition of trying to manipulate the forces of energy to be harmonious in a space. While some of you out there think the art of Feng Shui may not be real, a lot of the rules make a lot of sense. For example, they say you should never hang heavy artwork above your head while you’re sleeping, because that can give you anxiety. The more you look into the research, the more it simply creates a space that just feels safe. When you make the effort to practice Feng Shui, you’re most likely going to be cleaning your home and redecorating, too. This process of rearranging furniture, art, and mirrors will liven up your space, and it’s almost guaranteed to make the place better.

2. Salt

For centuries, salt has been used to ward off negative energy. In almost every Hollywood film involving witches, you’ll see a salt parameter, or someone throwing salt over their shoulders superstitiously. Many believers add salt to water that has been sitting in sunlight. Then, they use this salt water to mop the floors of their home. This truly can’t hurt, because salt has been used in cleaning products for some time.

1. High Frequency Sounds

The energy around us comes in the form of vibrations. Sound is one of the strongest vibrations out there, so some people use sound cleansing to break up the energy of their space. By repeating a sound like ringing a bell or clapping your hands, you can break up the stale air right away. Others believe that you need to play a sound that hits a certain frequency in order to have the best results. A Tibetan Singing Bowl is an example of an object that was created specifically to clear energy in a space. These are often used during meditation and chants, and have been used by Buddhist monks for a very long time.
